A diminishing membership in the Carlyle Legion needs younger generations to sign up in order to keep it alive. Once upon a time, only veterans with the Canadian Military or their family could gain a membership, however, to encourage younger people to become involved with the Legion, new rules allow pretty much anyone to join. “To some people it’s just an old boys club,” said Jack Wilson, Legion member in Carlyle. “Not anymore. It’s pretty well open to anyone.” [more]

Five new teachers, along with one university student working on her teaching internship, are settling into their new positions at G.F. Kells High School in Carlyle. While a couple just began their teaching career last week, others are veterans, just looking for change in pace. [more]

Staff and students at Carlyle Elementary School welcomed three new teachers as well as a student services worker last week during the first day back after summer vacation. Marnie McKinnon, Kristin Byers and Natalie Bloomfield took over the vacant teaching positions while Jeff Laforet took over the newly expanded student services worker position. [more]

Arcola / Carlyle Primary Health Team plans to hold the grand opening for its Carlyle location on Wednesday Sept. 10. After renovations to the Carlyle Medical Clinic, the building now changes over to become the Carlyle Primary Health Clinic. [more]

The old familiar face that’s been a cornerstone at the Red Market Barn Flea Market for the last 24 years said goodbye on Sept. 1 during a retirement party. Ruby McGibney, worked as a the loyal ‘Keeper of the Gate’, every Sunday for 24 years, missing only three Sundays while on vacation in Germany one summer. [more]

The recent Listeria outbreak, which promoted Maple Leaf Foods to recall hundreds of products produced by the company, caused some local businesses to pull a number of ready-to-eat meat products from their shelves.

“We pulled quite a bit of stuff,” said Larry Chapman, meat manager, Chapman’s Foods. “There’s about three or four or five hundred dollars worth I imagine. Remember, Maple Leaf means Schneiders, Maple Leaf, Burns – it’s a huge company.” [more]
